Crime Prevention and Safety Tips
The MBPD has produced a number of crime prevention and safety tips to help residents, businesses, and visitors identify and prevent unlawful acts such as auto and residential burglaries, beach thefts, and bicycle thefts. As always, safety is our top priority. If you see something, say something. Call Police!
Auto Burglary
- Don’t leave valuables visible in your vehicle
- Close all windows and lock all doors before leaving vehicle
- Park in a well-lit and heavily populated area
- Be aware of your surroundings when entering and exiting your vehicle
- Don’t leave garage door openers in parked vehicle
- Don’t think dark tints will hide your valuables
- If you must leave valuables in your car, place items out of sights prior to reaching your destination
- Report any suspicious persons you observe in a parking lot
- Avoid parking next to occupied vehicles
- Do not leave your keys/fob in your vehicle
Residential Burglary
- Ensure your residence appears occupied while you are away (mail and newspapers picked up, lawn mown, hedges trimmed, vehicles moved periodically, etc.)
- Put lights on a timer inside and out
- Set alarm (and have alarm signage posted)
- Do not have ladders and tools accessible around the outside of the house
- Don’t leave spare key accessible (keep it with a trusted neighbor if possible)
- Build trust with neighbors and keep an eye on each other’s houses
- Install a home safe
- Don’t advertise on social media that you will be out of town
Beach Thefts
- Use a waterproof pouch for phone and other valuables
- Only bring the amount of money you will need (leave the rest at home or in hotel safe)
- Designate one person to stay behind with belongings while you’re in the water
- Pick a spot close to the lifeguard tower
- Don’t leave your items unattended
- Do not go on the beach after it is closed
Bicycle Theft Prevention
- Lock it! – Always lock the bicycle when unattended, and only leave it in well-lit areas where there is frequent pedestrian traffic. Always lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack. Never lock just the front wheel; be sure include the rear wheel and frame. Use a recommended, high-security bicycle lock. Report suspicious activities – Report all bike thefts and suspicious activities near bicycle parking areas.
