What is the purpose of “smoke testing”?
To find possible leaks in the sanitary sewer system and roof drain connections.
Is the smoke harmful?
No, the smoke is not harmful to your health in low quantities. If you have any concerns because of an adverse breathing condition please contact the MB Control Room at 305.673.7625 prior to testing.
What do you do if the smoke gets into your home/business?
If you experience smoke in your property, please alert the crew working in the area or call our MB Control Room at 305.673.7625. Once smoke appears, please open windows for ventilation. To prepare for smoke testing to take place, please check to see that all traps under basins (sink drains), washing facilities and floor drains have water in them.
I will not be at home during the smoke testing and have pets in the house, what should I do?
While the smoke is not harmful to pets, please leave several windows partially open for ventilation should any smoke enter the building due to a leak. If you have proper connections and all of the traps have water in them, the likelihood of there being any problems is minimal.
If smoke gets into my home/business, how long does it take to dissipate?
This will depend on how much smoke enters the building and how much ventilation you can provide. With proper ventilation, it should dissipate quickly.
Will the smoke obstruct the sewers?
No, the smoke is made up of a vaporous substance.
What happens if you find a bad sewer or lack of traps in a building?
This information will be documented and will be used by city staff to determine what steps are necessary to remedy the problem.
