(Miami Beach, FL) Oct 17, 2022 -

Miami Beach Public Works Director José “Joe” Gómez, P.E. has been selected by the Cuban American Association of Civil Engineers to receive the annual Luis P. Saenz Engineer of the Year Award.

“Our city is very fortunate to have someone with Joe’s experience as we address difficult challenges like sea level rise and aging infrastructure,” Miami Beach Vice Mayor Alex Fernandez said. “I know I speak for all of my fellow commissioners in extending our heartfelt congratulations to him.”

The award is named in honor of Luis P. Saenz, P.E., a Cuban-born civil structural engineer who attained international recognition for his work. The honor is given to an exemplary Professional Civil Engineer who, through his or her projects and endeavors, reflects superior civil engineering skills that have made a significant contribution to civil engineering.

Before joining the City of Miami Beach in August 2021, Gomez served as Director of Transportation Operations with the Florida Department of Transportation District Six where he was responsible for a staff of more than 600 and construction contracts totaling $250 million. He has held various public and private roles throughout his career, including project manager for a private firm that developed the design criteria for the future I-395 signature bridge, where Gomez led the design criteria team.

“We are delighted that Joe has received this well-deserved recognition from his peers,” Miami Beach City Manager Alina T. Hudak said. “The breadth of his projects and accomplishments is truly impressive.”

The award will be presented at the 61st Annual Engineer’s Day Gala on Oct. 22 at the Hyatt Regency Miami.
