โ€”Property owners may receive up to $20,000 in grants for eligible resilience projects โ€”

Miami Beach, FL โ€“ The City of Miami Beach will once again begin accepting applications for up to $20,000 in reimbursement grants on eligible flood mitigation projects, including $2,500 in private flood risk assessments.

โ€œMiami Beach is one of the first cities that offers financial incentives for residential and commercial property owners to protect their homes and businesses against flooding,โ€ explained Miami Beach City Manager Eric T. Carpenter. โ€œWeโ€™ve all seen the damage that can occur when property owners are caught off guard and we want to reduce that risk.โ€

Applications for the 2025 Fight the Flood Private Property Adaptation (PPA) program may be submitted between Feb. 26 and April 25 for consideration in the next round of funding. Eligible projects can incorporate building elevation and floodproofing, electrical life safety, mechanical flood protection, temporary flood barriers, wet floodproofing, flood-resistant materials, drainage, permeable pavers, rain gardens, seawalls and other improvements.

Residential property owners in Miami Beach may also be able to take advantage of the statewide Elevate Florida program that was recently unveiled by the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Designed to protect homes and communities by reducing damage caused by natural disasters like hurricanes and floods, Elevate Florida provides at least 75% funding for various types of projects, including structure elevation, mitigation reconstruction and structure acquisition. To apply, create an account and complete an application at www.floridadisaster.org/dem/mitigation/elevate-Florida/.

Miami Beachโ€™s innovative PPA program is open to owners of single-family homes, multifamily complexes and businesses with 58 projects already in various stages of completion. Low-to-moderate income applicants are eligible to receive the entire $20,000 maximum reimbursement without a funding match.

The National Institute of Building Sciences estimates that every dollar spent on resilience can save an estimated $13 in disaster response and recovery costs.

An internal team of reviewers will evaluate and prioritize each application based on established criteria that includes elevation, residential status, historic designation, income and flood data.

An informational virtual workshop will be held on March 13 at 6 p.m. The application and workshop recording will be available at www.mbrisingabove.com/ppa.
