New World Symphony presents I Dream a World: Transitions and Trailblazers

February 8 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Groundbreaking composers, a dramatic hymn and the American spirit…

Explore the rich artistic output of Black artists who bridged the Harlem Renaissance to the Civil Rights Movement, creating musical beauty during a war-torn era while finding greater acceptance in Europe than their own country. Conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson leads Julia Perry’s Stabat mater, a dramatic hymn that launched Perry’s flourishing career across continents. William L. Dawson infused his Negro Folk Symphony with the hopeful spirituals from his childhood, while the “Dean of African American Composers”—William Grant Still—displays his version of the American spirit in his Festive Overture.

This event is part of the 2025 I Dream a World: Transitions and Trailblazers festival. Visit nws.edu/dream for more information.

The New World Symphony’s annual I Dream a World festival is made possible with support from the NWS Collaborations Fund.

Resonance of Remembrance

This concert is part of Resonance of Remembrance. New World Symphony is proud to present Resonance of Remembrance, a season-long commemoration marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust. This series’ music serves not only as timeless memorials honoring the millions of lives lost, but also as urgent warnings for today.

We are all moral witnesses to the despair, suffering and destruction that war has wrought upon our world, and its many lessons—about conflict and peace, totalitarianism and resilience. Music compels us to consider our shared humanity, allowing us to learn from the past and envision a peaceful future for all. More information at www.nws.edu/peace.
