Second Saturday Seminar: Learn to Love Bats with Stephanie Brinez
Stephanie Brinez is very passionate about conservation and this passion has led her to a position as an endangered species interventions specialist with Bat Conservation International (BCI). With BCI she monitors the Florida bonneted bat populations and conducts diet, light pollution, and acoustic research that helps target their conservation efforts.
Spooky season is here, but did you know October is also Bat Awareness month? In this seminar we will be debunking some myths about bats, learning the species of bats found in Florida, and diving a little deeper into a discussion about South Florida’s unique Florida bonneted bat. This is America’s most endangered bat, and we will be learning all about the dangers that come to this bat and how we can all help it!
Stephanie will be presenting this seminar remotely via Zoom. However, we will also have a room set up for people who would like to attend in-person. Following the presentation there will be some coloring activities for the little ones, or anyone interested, as well as some examples of technology we use in bat conservation! Our Horticulture Manager, Riki Bonnema, will also lead a walk around the Garden to listen for any bat activity using a special app to see if any bats are in the area!
Event is free –– please RSVP. (Donations accepted)
We’ll also be broadcasting via Zoom! Just click HERE at meeting time.
