Homeless Outreach

The City of Miami Beach employs a street outreach team that engages the homeless where they are sleeping, resting and panhandling. The team is trained to engage people from an assessment-driven approach that is sensitive to mental illness and addiction issues. The outreach team conducts missions during daytime hours as well as responding to online service requests via the city’s eGov application.

The city has the only municipal walk-in center for the homeless in Miami-Dade County, located in 771 17 Street. It is a fixed place where people wanting help can access professional, courteous support to leave the street behind. Our services include:

Emergency shelter (men, women and children) with Care Coordination services tailored to each client’s individual strengths and needs. The city contracts with 4 shelter providers to ensure that the most appropriate placement is made for each person.
In-house employment services to ease a person back into the workforce.
Application assistance for all entitlements including disability and SNAP benefits.
Identification documentation replacement (including birth certificates, government-issued ID, work permits and driver’s license).
Job placement.
Family reunification/relocation services (providing relocation to any location in the contiguous U.S. where someone is willing and able to provide shelter and support).
Mental health screening and services.
Rent assistance (for those who have been stabilized and can sustain independent housing).
Referral to permanent, independent and supportive services.

The mission of the Homeless Outreach Team is to support homeless people who are ready to leave the streets and seek productive, personally rewarding lives.

We Can’t Do It Alone

Homeless is a community-wide problem that requires a community-wide response.

You can make a difference by:

Discouraging panhandling by alternatively making cash donations directly to homeless service provider or using homeless meters conveniently located throughout the city.
Letting people know that help is available for those homeless in Miami Beach by distributing Are You Ready? cards.
Encouraging responsible food reclamation, enabling food donation to soup kitchens and pantries and discouraging dumpster diving, which can be dangerous and result in harmful conditions for all.
Posting “No Trespassing” Signs to discourage vagrancy at your home and business. Sample trespassing signs can be found here.
Reporting trespassing, dangerous and illegal activity to police who, in turn, can engage the homeless in hopes of getting them to accept services.
Notifying the City’s Homeless Outreach Team if you see someone needing help on our streets.
