Celebrate Juneteenth on Miami Beach

— The holiday marks America’s second Independence Day —

Miami Beach, FL – Join the City of Miami Beach for its fifth annual Juneteenth celebration to honor the contributions of Black Americans while remembering the emancipation of those who had been enslaved. This year’s event will feature “Miami Dance Heat Wave,” a dance performance by the Peter London Global Dance Company in partnership with the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 1100 Lincoln Road.

In addition, Miami Beach will host various events throughout the city on Juneteenth and surrounding dates as follows:

The Juneteenth Experience

Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 7 p.m.

The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road

The Juneteenth Experience event will be a riveting interdisciplinary performance seamlessly melding spoken word, dance, music, and multimedia elements, promising an unforgettable 60-minute journey. The array of local and international talents includes leading vocalists and an incredible band under the direction of Musical Director King Friday; dance from Zest Collective under the direction of Gentry George; original text and poetry by Arsimmer McCoy and creative producer Miriam King; and set projections and digital scenes rendered by Bajan artists and creative Russell Watson.

The Betsy Hotel Juneteenth 2024

Wednesday, June 19, 2024 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Betsy Hotel, 1440 Ocean Drive

Juneteenth Jazz at The Betsy features John Harden, Piano, and Ja'Nia Harden, Vocals in The Piano Bar at The Betsy Hotel. John and Ja'Nia skillfully play off of each other during their performances with influences that include Bobby McFerrin, Dinah Washington, Al Jarreau, Jimmy Smith, Robert Glasper, and Bobby Floyd. The couple creates a soulful groove featuring fusion based music of all genres, including jazz and soul.

Film Screening: Selma

Selma, a powerful historical drama that chronicles the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. Set against the backdrop of the turbulent civil rights movement, the film highlights the strategic planning and grassroots organizing that went into these pivotal marches. Director Ava DuVernay's vision brings a sense of urgency and authenticity to the story, capturing the intense emotions and high stakes of the struggle for equal voting rights.

Culture Crawl: Bookbinding 101

Presenting a free guided tour of Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance starting at 6:30 p.m. Following the tour, draw inspiration from the publications on display and design a book to take home with you in our Bookbinding 101 workshop (materials and instruction provided).

Harlem Renaissance and the Tropics

Sunday, June 23, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Explore the cultural reach of the Caribbean in the Harlem Renaissance during a day of talks and conversation inspired by our Silhouettes exhibition. Art historian Samantha Noel kicks things off with a keynote presentation about how American artists like Aaron Douglas and Josephine Baker used "tropical aesthetics" to shape the development of Black modernity. Following the talk, enjoy a reception and a panel discussion with FIU faculty that will draw connections between the broader cultural movement, the tropics, and featured works in the show, offering fresh perspectives and insights into this transformative time.
