Sun-Kissed Success: Journey of Resilience, Innovation, and Mentorship

The National Womenโ€™s History Alliance (NWHA) is a leader in promoting womenโ€™s history and is committed to education, empowerment, equality, and inclusion. NWHA proudly established March as National Womenโ€™s History Month, ensuring diverse womenโ€™s voices and contributions are recognized and celebrated.

For 2025, NWHA proudly presents the theme โ€œMoving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.โ€ This theme celebrates the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship, and leadership. Fabiola Trujillo is a prime example of an inspirating women entrepreneur in Miami Beach since 1998.

In the late 1990s, Fabiola Trujillo arrived, from Ecuador, with her young son Gabriel Olas. She had dreamed of providing her son with a better future, and she believed the United States was the right place to make that dream a reality. Miami Beach welcomed them, and Fabiola pursued her dream.  Fascinated by the world of beauty and wellness, she threw herself into learning how to be an aesthetician, studying skin care, healing, empowerment, and transformation. She was a natural and enjoyed making people feel special.

She carried her dreams and skills to the heart of South Beach, where she began working with prestigious hotels, such as the Delano and the Ritz Carlton, and with celebrities and international clients. This environment exposed her to creative and innovative skin care practices, procedures, and how to turn a basic treatment into an indulgent experience.

Fabiola was particularly drawn toward self-tanning or airbrush tanning treatments. Eager to improve the treatment, Fabiola developed an eco-certified, vegan, cruelty and paraben free tanning formulas that exposed her services to thousands of clients. Fabiola credits the growth of her business on her ability to persevere and access happy client influencers. She leveraged social media and bought ads in prominent magazines. After appearing in Ocean Drive, and multiple mentions in national magazines, Fabiolaโ€™s business attracted high-end clients, and she appeared on โ€œKourtney and Kim Take Miamiโ€ where the famous sisters were clients and after that she never looked back.

The opening of SobeTan, in 2013 on Lincoln Road, was the result of years of saving, planning, and sacrificing.  In 2023, she moved the salon to a larger space in Mid-Beach, where she created the Spray Academy, which trains, coaches, and inspires the next generation of skin care professions Fabiola Trujilloโ€™s journey, like many phenomenal women entrepreneurs and moms, started with a dream, nurtured a passion, developed a calling, fostered creativity, and is transforming lives. Blue Zones in Miami Beach: How Your Business Can Benefit

In February 2025, the City of Miami Beach launched a six-month Blue Zone assessment to explore how the city can be a healthier place to live, work and play.  Blue Zones are geographic regions around the world where people live exceptionally long and healthy lives. The term was coined by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic explorer, after he identified five areas with a high concentration of centenarian (people living beyond 100 years). The Blue Zone team is in Miami Beach examining how the city can be enhanced by making lasting changes to the environment and health choices. Benefits include healthier population, increased economic growth, stronger community engagement, environmental advances, and enhanced quality of life.

"The Blue Zone initiative could be a catalyst for transformational change for the residents of our city," states Commissioner Tanya Bhatt, "By identifying and understanding the key factors that promote longevity and well-being, Miami Beach can develop strategies to improve health and lifespan.โ€ Commissioner Tanya Bhatt aims to position Miami Beach as a model for health and wellness, stating, "Miami Beach can be an inspiration for individuals and communities to adopt healthier lifestyle choices.โ€

The Blue Zone assessment includes a readiness assessment, which is a structured exploration to determine how Blue Zones can amplify the good work occurring in Miami Beach and leverage existing plans to lift and increase the well-being of all residents and stakeholders in the area. Kelsie Cajka, the Transformation Operations Director, of Blue Zones, shared how local businesses can benefit from Blue Zones strategies:

1. The original five Blue Zones are Icaria, Greece, Loma Linda, California, Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Nicoya, Costa Rica. Which one do you think is most compatible with Miami Beach?

It is hard to compare the original Blue Zones to Miami Beach, but a common element is that the cities are walkable and embrace gardening in their daily lives. Compatible characteristics of Blue Zones, however, are high rates of physical activity, plant-based, nutrient-rich diets, strong social connections and community support, low stress levels, and a sense of purpose and spiritual engagement.

2. Currently how many Blue Zones are in the United States, and which have been successful?

There are currently 90 Blue Zones in the United States. Though each city has individual goals and initiatives, they embed Blue Zone principles and track their success with Gallup polls and measuring well-being, social initiatives and wealth. For example, one community might be focused on assisting businesses and another one may focus on becoming a more pedestrian friendly community. Salinas, California was introduced to Blue Zones in 2019, through the establishment of Blue Zones Project Monterey County. Over five years, the Salinas initiative expanded, resulting in a measurable reduction in chronic health risks, increased civic pride, and improvements in overall well-being. Salinasโ€™ designation as a certified Blue Zones Communityยฎ, the first city to earn this designation in Monterey County, is an important milestone.  The communityโ€™s overall well-being score improved by 5.9 points, from 61.7 to 67.6, representing a nearly 10% increase during a period in which many regions across the country experienced significant declines in well-being due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

3. How does a city become a Blue Zone?

A "Blue Zone" designation requires community-wide initiatives to foster healthy lifestyles, including policy changes, building design improvements, and promoting social networks, based on research from regions with the highest concentrations of centenarians and people with long lives. There are four main phases of Blue Zones designation: 1) identification, 2) exploration, 3) research, and 4) certification. This process usually takes up to 5-7 years.

4. How can Miami Beach businesses benefit from a Blue Zone designation?

The business community benefits from Blue Zone strategies which promote increased tourism and hospitality revenue, attraction of health-focused businesses and investment, reduced healthcare costs and increased productivity, stronger community ties and customer loyalty, and public support.

5. What are some of the challenges businesses or governments face when implementing a Blue Zone community?

Challenges are unique to each city, however, we have seen that though a business or a government implementing Blue Zone principals does so with good intention, challenges are real. There may be resistance to change, funding obstacles for healthier options and infrastructure improvements, and measuring and maintaining a long-term impact takes patience.  However, the Blue Zone team believes being physically in the city, to implement the goals and initiatives of each community, is essential and helps navigate and solve perceived and real hurdles.

This Month in Miami Beach: The Incorporation of Miami Beach (March 26, 1915)

March is a significant month in Miami Beachโ€™s history, marking the official incorporation of our city on March 26, 1915. What began as a vision for a resort destination, amidst swampland and mangroves, has grown into a international destination for art, culture, hospitality, and economic opportunity.

From Untamed Wilderness to Iconic City

Prior to being the vibrant city it is today, Miami Beach was just a barrier island covered in mangroves, pine trees, and wild coconut palms. First developed in the late 1800s, when pioneers like John S. Collins, Carl Fisher, and the Lummus brothers saw the potential for a tropical paradise. Collins, a New Jersey businessman, initially attempted to grow coconuts on the land but quickly shifted his focus to real estate development. His dream took shape when Fisher, an automotive tycoon, provided financial backing to complete the Collins Bridge in 1913, linking Miami Beach to the mainland and setting the stage for the city's growth.

March 26, 1915: A City is Born

Recognizing the potential for development and tourism, local residents voted to incorporate Miami Beach as a city on March 26, 1915. At the time, it had a population of only a few dozen people, but that number would soon skyrocket as developers transformed the area into an upscale winter destination.

Thereafter the founders sought out to create Miami Beachโ€™s unique identity, one built on luxury, leisure, and innovation. In the 1920s, the city flourished with Mediterranean Revival architecture, lavish hotels, and a booming tourism industry. By the 1930s and 1940s, the rise of Art Deco cemented Miami Beachโ€™s reputation as a glamorous escape for celebrities, business magnates, and sun-seekers alike.

110 Years of Growth and Evolution

As the 110th anniversary nears, it is remarkable to see how far the Miami Beach  has grown. From a pioneering beachfront settlement to an international hub for business, culture, and hospitality, Miami Beach continues to evolve and make bold moves.

Today, the city remains a leader in economic development, with initiatives focused on attracting new businesses, fostering innovation, and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. The same entrepreneurial spirit and values that drove the cityโ€™s founders still fuels Miami Beachโ€™s growth, ensuring it remains an iconic destination for generations to come.

Looking to the Future

While much has changed since 1915, Miami Beachโ€™s commitment to progress, sustainability, and economic vitality remains strong and committed to innovation, resilience, and excellence.

Happy 110th Anniversary Miami Beach!

Aiming Beyond High - My Health & Wellness Medical Group

Black health and wellness is an important theme that focuses on the health of Black Americans and the contributions of Black scholars and medical practitioners. It also acknowledges the struggles that Black Americans face in healthcare and the importance of wellness for strength and resilience.

The theme for this yearโ€™s Black History Month focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds โ€“ free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary โ€“ intersect with the collective experiences of Black Americans. Miami-Dade County is ranked 5th in the nation for the largest number of Black-owned employer businesses, and Miami's Black consumer market is valued at $5.5 billion dollars, making it the 14th largest in the nation. Therefore, it is an opportune time to focus on a thriving Miami Beach medical practitioner and entrepreneur, Dr. Rachael Nambusi.

Dr. Nambusiโ€™s journey began in East Africa, and her journey has led to her ascending to be a renowned physician and flight surgeon in Miami Beach. Some would think this is extraordinary.  It is due to Rachaelโ€™s passion for medicine, from an early age where she witnessed the health struggles faced by her community and committed to focus on the importance of joy and wellness and making a difference in the world through medicine.

A Doctor of Medicine graduate of Ross University, Dr. Nambusi enjoyed the Barbados global community, the blend of cultures and lifestyle that listened to, cared for, advocated for, and helped the least resourced get necessary care. The experience ignited her passion for global health and the opportunity to focus on preventive measures to ensure the community could live the best holistic and fulfilled lives possible.

In 2017, it was no surprise that Dr. Nambusiโ€™s career led to an opportunity to see more of the world via the United States Air Force. As a flight surgeon, in the Air Force Reserves, she combined her love of aviation with her commitment to health and service. A challenging and exhilarating experience, she witnessed the impact of high-altitude and high stress environments on the pilots and crewโ€™s health and wellness.

Despite her impressive military career, she was called to Miami Beach. Dr. Nambusi says she was drawn by the vibrant culture and diverse population, and she felt it was the perfect place to make a meaningful impact. Dr. Nambusiโ€™s vision was clear: she wanted to open a clinic that focused on preventative medicine and help people before they became patients. With her training, experiences, and passion for health, she took a leap of faith and opened her own clinic, which she calls her โ€œBaby,โ€ in the heart of the Mid-Beach neighborhood.

My Health and Wellness Medical Group (MHV Group) offers personalized healthcare services including Direct Primary Care, Occupational Health Exams, Veterans C&P Exams, PACT ACT, Obesity care and Weight loss, and Immunizations.  One of the MHV Group unique services is Red Light Therapy, which is a simple non-invasive treatment that works by stimulating the mitochondria in cells to produce more energy.

โ€œMHV is committed to offering individualized specialty care to meet the unique physical, social and emotional needs of each patientโ€, states Dr. Nambusi.  โ€œWhether you're seeking preventive measures or seeking relief through innovative therapies, MHV Medical Group is here to cater to your holistic health needs."

Dr. Nambusi and MHV are on a mission to imbed preventive healthcare in the community. The intent is to help reduce health disparities and improve overall quality of life. Preventative care can detect potential health issues early, which can improve disease prognosis and reduce the impact of chronic conditions.  Dr. Nambusi wants to build healthier lives with focus on maintaining a balanced lifestyle that is physically, mentally, and emotionally resilient.

Dr. Nambusi has accomplished everything she strived to be, a doctor, a surgeon, a healer, and educator. Her story of a resilient, passionate, and driven healer clearly has more chapters to come. She lives by a motto she learned during her time in the Air Force: โ€œMission first, people always,โ€, and she continues to dedicate her life to ensuring that everyone under her care is healthy, strong, and ready to take on the world. Join us in celebrating Dr. Nambusi, her legacy of outstanding contributions to the community, as she is making Black History in Miami Beach and excelling in a world of evolution and constant change. Celebrating Miami Beach Art Deco Centennial 1925- 2025 : The Business, Arts, Creativity and Sensation of the Art Deco Era

2025 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Art Deco movement. This is an opportune moment to reflect on how the iconic style has shaped the world of design and the business communityโ€”particularly Miami Beach. Art Deco, which emerged in the early 20th century, combines luxurious materials, bold geometric shapes, and streamlined forms. Its influence is felt across multiple industries, from hotels to restaurants to commercial businesses.

The Miami Beach Art Deco Historic District stands as one of the best preserved examples of Art Deco architecture in the world. In the 1930s, the wave of new buildings gained popularity with the distinctive style, with sleek and angular lines, stylized patterns, and luxurious details. Hotels, restaurants, and shops adopted Art Deco elements to distinguish themselves in a competitive market, often blending the bold style with local tropical influences.

Hotels like the Avalon and the National, exemplify  how Art Deco served as both a functional space for tourists and an opportunity for memorable branding. The glistening neon lights, colorful facades, and glamorous interiors attracted attention and conveyed a sense of modern elegance that resonated with visitors seeking an escape into the evolving, new and vibrant world. For business owners, adopting Art Deco was not just about aestheticsโ€”it was about capitalizing on a cultural moment that signaled luxury and modernity, encouraging investment and patronage.

"The National Hotel is proud to be a cornerstone of the Miami Beach Art Deco Weekend, a celebration that draws art, culture, and history enthusiasts from around the world,โ€ states Stephane Mercier, General Manager, The National Hotel. โ€œAs an iconic Art Deco landmark, we are honored to captivate visitors with our timeless design, vibrant atmosphere, and unique offerings, creating unforgettable experiences that celebrate the rich heritage of our community and resonate deeply with public interest. โ€œ

The 2025 Art Deco Weekend, January 18-20, 2025, theme was Art Deco Centennial 1925-2025, and was a free community cultural festival celebrating architecture, history, arts, and culture. Organized by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), the festival celebrated its 48th year with record attendance.

For Miami Beach businesses, from hospitality to real estate, the MDPL annual event is an opportunity to actively market Art Deco style properties and tap into the nostalgia of an era that continues to appeal to contemporary tastes. For visitors and residents, Miami Beach remains a testament to the power of design and its impact on a communityโ€™s economic vitality.

Many restaurants, museums and hotels took advantage of Art Deco Weekend to promote their businesses. As one of the iconic buildings in the heart of the Art Deco district, the Avalon Hotel was proud to participate in Art Deco Weekend. In addition to celebrating the historic legacy of Ocean Drive, the Avalon Hotel enthusiastically welcomed guests with:

  • a special Art Deco Lunch menu as part of its newly introduced Avalon by Day dining options;
  • a conversation with photojournalist Manny Hernandez and journalist Jacquelynn Powers, in partnership with MDPL, about celebrity-filled days of Ocean Drive in the โ€˜90s, amidst the backdrop of the Art Deco District;
  • an Avalon โ€œRocket Barโ€ special food and beverage offering for the Miami Vice Pub Crawl; and
  • live music on the terrace.

Complementing the 100th Anniversary celebration, the Mayor and City Commission approved an Art Deco Painting Incentive Program (the โ€œProgramโ€), a new grant launched during Art Deco Weekend, to inspire property owners and tenants to refresh Miami Beach Architectural District buildings with the historic Leonard Horowitz pastel color palette, emblematic of Art Deco design.

The Program will provide matching grants, covering up to 50% of eligible painting costs, with a maximum city contribution of $20,000 per property. The Program invites property owners and tenants, of contributing historic buildings, within the Miami Beach Architectural District, generally located between 5" Street and 23ยฐ Street, along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue, to participate in this collaborative effort to preserve and revive the city's historic landscape. The City is partnering with renowned British designer Barbara Hulanicki, a pivotal figure in architectural revitalization, to revitalize Miami Beachโ€™s iconic Art Deco architecture. This Month in Miami Beach History: The Beatlesโ€™ Iconic Performance at the Deauville Hotel

In February 1964, the Beatles performed their second live U.S. television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and Miami Beach became the epicenter of Beatlemania. The February 16 broadcast attracted an estimated 70 million viewers, cementing the Beatles' place in music history and  worldwide attention to Miami Beach.

The broadcast took place in the iconic Deauville Hotel, a glamorous symbol of the city's mid-century architecture, and, played a pivotal role in showcasing Miami Beach as a global destination for entertainment and culture. The Beatles were more than a moment in pop culture; the performance demonstrated the power of large-scale entertainment to drive economic development. The influx of fans to the city had a significant economic impact on the Miami Beach brand as a hub for glamour and innovation, and the ripple effect of this performance extended far beyond the music and  stimulated unexpected local business performance.

This historic milestone is a lasting example of the enduring synergy between culture and business in Miami Beach. The event extends beyond the art world, positioning Miami Beach as a premier destination for creativity and innovation. Local institutions including the Greater Miami Convention and Visitor Bureau (GMCVB), Bass Museum, Miami Beach Botanical Garden and local and countywide hospitality and cultural organizations amplified the cityโ€™s reputation as a hub for art and culture, tourism, and economic vitality.
