From the confines of a WWII prisoner-of-war camp rises the “most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century” (The New Yorker). NWS Fellows and celebrated pianist Anne-Marie McDermott perform Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. Inspired by the Biblical Book of Revelations, Messiaen channeled the Angel of the Apocalypse through bird song, dance rhythms and what he called the “harmonies of heaven.” Melody Eötvös found inspiration for The King in Yellow in the pages of another book—a psychological horror of the same name, while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart considered his lighthearted Piano Quintet “the best thing I have written in my life.”
This concert is part of Resonance of Remembrance, a season-long series commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust. More information at www.nws.edu/peace.
