Discover Your Inner Artist at Art Week Miami Beach 2023
Art collectors, artists and celebrities from around the world will again descend on Miami Beach as the city welcomes Art Week Miami Beach from Monday, Dec. 4 to Sunday, Dec. 10. The week features dozens of glamorous events, public art pieces and one-of-a kind exhibitions amid the city’s seven miles of pristine beaches, chic hotels and award-winning culinary offerings.
“Miami Beach will once again become the center of the arts universe, and we couldn’t be prouder,” shared Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “Hosting this incredible gathering of top contemporary artists, galleries and collectors every year has helped transform our city into one of the true arts and culture destinations in the world.”
Art Basel Miami Beach will feature 277 leading international galleries, starting with Preview Days on December 6 and 7, followed by Public Days on December 8 to 10, 2023 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Nearly two-thirds of this year’s galleries hail from North and South America, joined by an array of exhibitors from Europe, Asia and Africa. Free to the public, Art Basel’s Conversations program will return with a series of live debates among thought leaders on the key topics shaping the world of art and culture, with a focus on celebrating Latin America.
The City of Miami Beach will also curate its own public exhibitions during Art Week Miami Beach, including along the 41 Street corridor, Española Way and in 12 hotel lobbies across the city.
The temporary installation along the 41 Street corridor, “Run run run like the wind” by Miami-based artist Edison Peñafiel, will be presented on Monday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at Harry Liebman Square at the corner of Pine Tree Drive and 41 Street. The work is a selection of brightly colored banners that use lyrics from Latin American protest songs from the 1960s and 70s, including Victor Jara’s “El Aparecido” and “Run run se fue pa’l norte” by Violeta Parra. The installation tells a story of migration, and the push and pull of leaving behind what’s known for a new, uncertain future.
Elevate Española will present “Adora Vanessa Athena Fantasia,” a newly-commissioned art installation by Brazilian artist Eli Sudbrack of collective assume vivid astro focus (avaf) on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Española Way. The work features five suspended large-scale portraits printed on both sides in avaf’s distinctively vibrant style paying tribute to Miami Beach area drag artist icons.
The piece is the third installment of Elevate Española, a temporary public art program launched by the city in 2022, which aims to enhance the corridor and encourage pedestrian connectivity to Ocean Drive.
Other highlights of Art Week Miami Beach include the fourth edition of the city-produced and curated No Vacancy, Miami Beach, which matches 12 artists with 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels. Funded in partnership with the Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, this year’s art competition features $35,000 in prize money, including a $10,000 public prize by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and a $25,000 juried prize to be decided by nationally-recognized art experts. Each artist will also receive a $10,000 stipend. The installations are available for viewing now through Dec. 14.
The popular Art Basel Legacy Purchase Program will return for its fifth year with previously acquired works by artists Sanford Biggers, Amoako Boafo, Ebony G. Patterson, Farah Al Qasimi and Juana Valdes on behalf of the residents of Miami Beach.
The City of Miami Beach has also commissioned a sand sculpture to mark 2023 Art Week Miami Beach at Lincoln Road beachfront for resident and visitor photo ops.
GETTING AROUND
With large numbers of visitors expected to attend Art Week Miami Beach 2023, the city encourages eventgoers to take advantage of the free citywide Miami Beach Trolley, public transit, ride-sharing options, and the recently completed Beachwalk that spans the entire 7-mile length of the city’s oceanfront for those that prefer to bike or walk.
Biking and micro-mobility enthusiasts will also find miles of green bike lanes and convenient bicycle parking throughout Miami Beach. View the city’s bicycle parking maps for more information. Additionally, Citi Bike offers more than a thousand bicycles, including electric-assisted bikes, at conveniently located bicycle sharing stations throughout the city.
Miami-Dade Transit offers Metrobus service to and from the mainland while the closest ride-sharing location to the Miami Beach Convention Center will be on the east side of Convention Center Drive north of 18 Street.
The citywide trolley service will place additional vehicles into service on all trolley routes from Wednesday, Dec. 6 through Sunday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to reduce average passenger wait times to approximately every 10 minutes during the enhanced service times. PEAK TRAVEL TIMES
The heaviest periods of traffic congestion during Art Week Miami Beach are typically on weekday afternoons with congestion increasing closer to the weekend. Traffic congestion leaving Miami Beach can be exacerbated by traffic or incidents on major thoroughfares outside of the city, including I-395, I-195 and I-95. The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) ongoing road work and lane reductions near the Biscayne Boulevard off-ramp in Downtown Miami is expected to impede westbound traffic leaving Miami Beach along the MacArthur Causeway. A citywide construction moratorium will suspend all construction-related activities within the public right of way throughout the week — prohibiting road, sidewalk and lane closures.
To reduce congestion along the Venetian Causeway connecting Downtown Miami and Miami Beach, the east Venetian Causeway drawbridge will be on lock-down and will not open to vessels from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 6-8 and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 9-10, except emergency vessels and tug/tows.
The city plans to implement special event signal timing changes and other traffic management measures along all major thoroughfares with an enhanced level of traffic monitoring for Art Week Miami Beach. This will include 14 hours of traffic monitoring each day and coordination with the Miami Beach Police Department to enforce traffic regulations at intersections while keeping motorists informed of delays through digital message signs. The city will proactively communicate with Waze, Google and Inrix to accurately reflect all street closures on their respective mobile platforms in real-time.
In addition, the city will issue traffic text alerts as warranted to notify the public of major roadway incidents. Subscribe to receive traffic text message alerts by texting MBAlert to 888777. City staff will work closely with the FDOT SunGuide Traffic Management Center to program traffic messages on overhead digital message signs along I-95, SR 112/I-195 and SR 836/I-395 regarding any major incidents on Miami Beach causeways.

Seeing Torah by Anita Rabinoff-Goldman is a colorful collection of 54 handmade quilt designs based on the artist’s interpretation of weekly Torah readings. Raymond Elman: The Portraits features 25 large-scale, mixed-media portraits documenting Elman’s life and relationships with interesting and influential people. The exhibit includes portraits of Richard Blanco, Lourdes Lopez, Campbell McGrath, Robert Zuckerman, Winston Scott, Gary Burton, Michele Oka Donor and others.

Work Table(au) is an architectural exhibition presenting the recent work of Associate Professor Jason R. The towering nude female sculpture, which will be showcased on the East Coast for the first time ever, first debuted at Burning Man and was designed by Marco Cochrane, the artist behind monumental sculptures seen at the Smithsonian Art Museum and the $4.3 billion Resorts World. The Betsy’s growing permanent collection and long-term artist partnerships are celebrated with Betsy Principal Curator Lesley Goldwasser highlighting work by Tamary Kudita, Charlie Spot, Nadia Huggins, Bunny Yeager, Carlos Andres Cruz, Robert Zuckerman, Val Kilmer, Robin Hill, and Ray Tenorio – on walls and in halls throughout the property. The Betsy Poetry Rail – a poetically-inspired installation, designed by architect Allan Shulman – is illuminated nightly, with artist Carlos Betancourt projecting film and images onto The Betsy Orband environs in a project commissioned by the City of Miami Beach No Vacancy program.
The Betsy’s exhibitions will be open for self-guided tours starting on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023. The Betsy’s art opening hosted by the Audace Initiative Morocco on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is free and open to the public.
