Indian Creek Drive to Reopen to Traffic

(Miami Beach, FL) Mar 22, 2022 -

A more resilient Indian Creek Drive is expected to reopen to traffic before the end of the month following a two-year improvement construction project.

“We raised the road elevation, put in new sidewalks and installed a comprehensive stormwater drainage system as well as an emergency auxiliary generator in case of a power outage,” Miami Beach City Manager Alina T. Hudak explained.

Indian Creek Drive is a key traffic artery in Miami Beach that links the city’s North Beach neighborhood to Mid Beach. The surrounding area has frequently flooded over the years during significant weather events and high tides.

The overall project is approximately 95% complete. Additional elements of the project that must still be completed under separate contracts include a greenway/pathway with landscaping and irrigation as well as the installation of a new seawall. In order to complete these additional items, temporary lane closures may be needed from time to time.

A similar project in the Sunset Harbour neighborhood has been credited with averting dozens of potential flooding events since it was completed.
