— Visitors have a history of leaving trash behind —

Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach will once again close its popular Flagler Monument Island to boaters over the long July 4 weekend in response to a history of littering by irresponsible visitors. The uninhabited island will close starting on Thursday, July 4 at 6 a.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, July 8.

“This is an uninhabited island that some boaters have historically used as a dumping ground,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones, who announced the closure following a similar closure over Memorial Day Weekend. “The city will set up an enforcement presence on the island throughout the holiday weekend as we have done in the recent past to ensure that boaters respect the temporary closure.”

Built by Miami Beach founding father Carl Fisher more than 100 years ago, the island features a 96-foot obelisk to honor Henry M. Flagler, a pioneer of modern Florida who founded the East Coast Florida Railway and built a hotel empire in the Sunshine State.

During the pandemic when the island was closed to the public for an extended period, it became home to the first documented nest of North American ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) in the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection at the time. The island is only accessible by boat.

The obelisk has been a familiar landmark for decades with its allegorical sculptures at the base. Unfortunately, boating enthusiasts have frequently left behind substantial piles of trash, including numerous empty beer cans and bottles.

– A yearlong pilot program will begin on Sunday, June 30 –

Miami Beach, FL – Starting Sunday, June 30, the City of Miami Beach and Poseidon Ferry will launch a new one-year water taxi pilot program to transport passengers between Miami Beach and Miami — aiming to ease traffic congestion between the two cities. The service will begin at the north side of Maurice Gibb Memorial Park (18 Street and Purdy Avenue, Miami Beach) and end at the Venetian Marina & Yacht Club (1635 N Bayshore Drive, Miami).

During the pilot program, the City of Miami Beach will subsidize approximately half of Poseidon Ferry's operations with a $600,000 financial contribution.

“The purpose of this cross-bay water taxi service is to provide commuters with a public transportation option to help decongest our roadways and help the city meet its long-term strategic goal of becoming less car-centric,” said Transportation and Mobility Director and Interim Parking Director José R. González. “Most successful waterborne public transportation services or commuter ferry services across the globe operate with some financial assistance from the government by way of subsidies.”

The city is also seeking federal and state grants for waterborne transportation to expand the program in the future.

“Our goal is to make your daily commute smoother by alleviating traffic congestion,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “Long-term I envision a cost-effective water taxi service that will efficiently transport people not only to neighboring Miami but north and south throughout Miami Beach.”

Hours of Operation and Frequency of Service

The water taxi will operate daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. except during the hours of 2-3 p.m. to accommodate a shift change. The vessel will depart from Maurice Gibb Memorial Park every hour on the half hour commencing at 7:30 a.m. and will depart the Venetian Marina & Yacht Club every hour on the hour starting at 8 a.m. The trip takes approximately 18 minutes each way.

To ensure accessibility for all passengers, both locations are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Fares

One-way fare prices are $5 for Miami Beach residents, $12 for non-residents, and $6 for seniors 65 years of age or older and disabled military personnel. Miami-Dade County Golden Passport holders and children 12 years old and younger will sail for free. There is a weekly commuter pass option for $30 (10 trips at $3 per trip) and a monthly commuter pass option for $120 (40 trips at $3 per trip).

Fares and passes can be purchased onboard the water taxi, at www.poseidonferry.com, on the Poseidon Ferry Mobile App or over the phone with a ticket agent by calling 844.623.3779 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. daily.

Miami Beach residents must show a valid I.D. to receive the resident rate. Resident fares will be waived during the first 30 days of operation through July 30.

Miami Beach residents can apply for a Golden Passport in person at the Miami Beach Customer Service Center at 1755 Meridian Ave, First Floor. Make an appointment online or call 305.673.7420.

Parking

Parking rates at the Sunset Harbour municipal parking garage will be reduced by 50 percent for all water taxi passengers. Residents will pay 50 cents per hour while non-residents will pay $1 per hour. Must show proof of water taxi fare upon exit to take advantage of the rate reduction.

— Chief Digna Abello will succeed Virgil Fernandez at the helm of one of the largest fire departments in South Florida —

Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach has become the first municipality in Miami-Dade County to appoint a woman to lead its fire department, which already holds the distinction of being one of only slightly more than 1% of the 37,983 participating fire agencies in the United States that have attained the prestigious ISO Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office.

“I am proud to appoint Chief Digna Abello as the first woman fire chief in Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County history,” said Miami Beach Interim City Manager Rickelle Williams. “Her unwavering integrity, breadth of experience, and innate leadership skills made her the clear and best choice.”

The Miami Beach City Commission unanimously approved Abello’s appointment today, Wednesday, June 26 effective on July 1. She will replace Miami Beach Fire Department Chief Virgil Fernandez who is retiring after more than 10 years with the agency and over four decades of service with fire agencies in South Florida.

“I am confident that I am turning over the department to the best possible candidate who will continue to make the agency stronger in the coming years,” said Fernandez.

Abello began her career as a Miami Beach firefighter over 19 years ago and quickly distinguished herself, rising to the rank of lieutenant with a focus on recruitment and administration. She was subsequently named division chief of support services, division chief of training and division chief of rescue — three major divisions within the department.

“I’m honored to serve the residents of Miami Beach as fire chief and will continue to uphold our department’s tradition of excellence,” said Abello, who was appointed to her current position as deputy chief of administration in 2020, where she has been involved in all significant department matters and initiatives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Abello directed the department's comprehensive response strategy, including the development of standard operating procedures and collaboration with relevant health agencies. She successfully launched the agency’s COVID-19 vaccination program that provided inoculations to more than 13,000 vulnerable residents.

She also spearheaded two rigorous ISO Class 1 accreditation cycles, which are based on the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule developed to assess the fire prevention and fire suppression capabilities of fire departments. In addition, Abello has overseen the Public Safety Communications Unit, which responds to all of the city’s 911 emergency calls and earned the distinction of being one of only 13 such organizations in the world to hold triple accreditation through the International Academy of Emergency Dispatchers.

The next chief received her bachelor's degree in emergency management from Barry University and holds numerous certifications, including fire inspector, fire officer, fire instructor, National Fire Academy leadership certification, incident command system certification and accreditation manager from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A BUSINESS TAX RECEIPT: WHY YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO IGNORE IT!

As a business owner, there are many important documents you need to keep track of to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations. One of the most critical documents is the business tax receipt (BTR).

A BTR, formerly known as an Occupational License, confirms that a business has paid its taxes in full for a specific period. The BTR serves as proof that the business has complied with its tax obligations and is up to date with its tax payments.

Maintaining a valid BTR is crucial for several reasons:

      1. Compliance with Tax Laws – a BTR is proof that your business has met its tax obligations, which helps to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations. Without a valid BTR, you may be subject to fines, penalties, and even audits from the tax authorities.
      2. Bank Account Opening - many banks and financial institutions require a valid BTR as part of the process for opening a business bank account. Without a valid BTR, you may not be able to open an account or may face restrictions on your business accounting activities.
      3. Government Contracts - when bidding for government contracts, a BTR is often required as part of the bidding process. This ensures that the government can verify your business compliance with tax laws and regulations before awarding the contract.
      4. Supplier and Vendor Requirements - many suppliers and vendors require a valid BTR, before they will do business with your business, to ensure your business is financially stable and compliant with tax laws.

How to obtain a Business Tax Receipt in the City of Miami Beach?

The City of Miami Beach Finance Department provides clear steps, expectations and a thorough explanation of BTR requirements that are user friendly. A Certificate of Occupancy (CO) and Certificate of Use (CU) may be necessary prior to occupancy of any commercial, industrial, or office location. If you are doing interior remodeling or alterations that require a permit, you will need to complete the work and obtain all final inspections prior to applying for the CO and/or CU. Then the business may apply for the BTR, which is proof of payment of the business tax and is required before a business opens or starts.

CO applications are reviewed by the Building Department, CU applications are reviewed by the Planning Department, and BTR applications are reviewed by the Finance Department Customer Service Center team.  The BTR and CU application process emulates how other municipalities and counties administer their business licenses.

All businesses wishing to operate in the City of Miami Beach must first obtain a CU

To apply for a CU online, please follow the instructions below:

      1. Go to:  http://www.mbselfservice.com (note: application reviews may result in a request for additional information/documentation).

        • Valid Lease/Recorded Warranty Deed
        • Articles of Incorporation
        • Federal Identification Number (FEIN)
        • Fictitious Name (if applicable)
        • Additional documentation may be required based on business type.
*DERM approval is required for all businesses, except professionals, home-based businesses, short-term rentals, and mobile car washes. For more information on how to apply to get a DERM inspection for your CU, click here

UNITY in CommUNITY!

Pride Month is a month-long celebration that recognizes the LGBTQ+ community and their contributions to society. It is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced by this community and to stand in solidarity with their fight for equality, acceptance, and human rights. Pride Month is a joyful and colorful display of love, unity, and resilience, with events and activities that promote inclusivity, educate the public, and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities. In honor of Pride Month, we sat down with Herb Sosa, the Executive Director of Unity Coalition to learn more about how the organization is assisting the LCBTQ community in Miami Beach.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to call Miami Beach your home:

I was born in Miami to Cuban exile parents who met/married here. My journey so far has taken me from living in Palm Springs, Hialeah, North, Kendall, and Little Havana to where I call home – Miami Beach.

Professionally, I was the creative director of Burdines department stores for many years, and I designed across Florida and later nationwide with Federated stores. I then opened my own company for branding & design and later started Ba=BaLU Shops – a collection of Cuban-themed boutiques. Voted one of Condé Nast magazine’s top 10 destinations in the world! I have always had a passion for architecture, history, and social conscience. As executive director of Miami Design Preservation League and Art Deco Weekend, president of Dade Heritage Trust, and chairing the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board, I have led a lifelong commitment to my community and its legacy and a passion for making things better. This led to both establishing an online monthly bilingual publication – AMBIENTE digital magazine, since 2003 and co-founding Unity Coalition|Colación Unida – a Florida nonprofit dedicated to the leadership of Latinx/Hispanic & Indigenous LGBTQI+ communities, with programming across South Florida and Colombia, since 2002.

What is Unity Coalition?

Unity Coalition is an organization for the Latinx|Hispanic & Indigenous LGBTQ+ community, advancing Equality & Fairness, through Education, Leadership and Awareness, since 2002, With programming in Miami Beach & Bogotá. Most of our programming has been created and focuses on the ever-changing and evolving needs of our community. We are proud to also have a truly diverse and professional board of directors, advisors and volunteers that listen, respond, and lead with actions and solutions to the many challenges we face. Some great examples of this came during the global pandemic of 2019. We recognized that one. Of course, we are thrilled to call Miami Beach home since 2001, and much of our programming has roots right here.

What is your annual fundraiser? - Our (14) annual Celebrate ORGULLO Hispanic & Indigenous PRIDE Festival, held every October, was an initiative created in unison with Mayor Matti Herrera-Bower to shed light on Miami Beach's diverse population and cultural heritage, and brings Art, Music, Theater and Pride events for 15 days, across South Florida. In 2022 the Celebrate ORGULLO Festival was named #4 of TripSaavy's 13 unique LGBT Events around the world!

What are some of your 2024 initiatives?
